National Stimulus Feedback and Landscape Values
December 18, 2009 – 9:43 amThe AILA National Office has been informed of a range of stories on the implementation of the Commonwealth’s Stimulus Package for infrastructure as well as the school’s program.
We would like to gather together some of the feedback, positives and the other, on the roles of landscape architects in the processes as well as on the value of landscape being considered - and any and all other related matters or issues.
All this will be fed into our thinking for future national and state based advocacy.
All feedback appreciated.

One Response to “National Stimulus Feedback and Landscape Values”
Our local Catholic primary school in Leichhardt which our children attend has received a $1.0M BER grant. As far as I can ascertain there was no landscape architect on the team, but I’m not sure as we have only been shown a single architectural drawing of the building plan and elevation. There was no parental consultation at all. The 200m2 building has been very poorly sited in relationship to the external playground spaces.
The building was intended to be two storey’s but was cut to a single storey. Perhaps because I understand from the school principal that a staggering 30% of the budget went on project management and design fees! Why one needs project management consultants on a $700K building with probably only two consultants (Architect and engineer) is beyond me.
Possibly also contributing to the reduction in scope is that construction costs presumably have risen due to the materials and construction demand created by all these works being built concurrently in a very narrow timeframe.
It has been all very rushed and in the end the legacy for our school while providing much needed floor space, is essentially a building in the wrong location which many of the parents believe is a rather poor outcome.
